Coffee arrived late to Papua New Guinea as compared to other islands. It was first introduced early in the 20th Century and it is believed that the seedling is actually that of the Jamaican Blue Mountain, brought and planted in Papua New Guinea. Predominantly located in isolated places in the highlands, the majority of farmers have small gardens within their villages.  Coffee is woven deep into the culture of Papua New Guinea as is often traded as currency among the people.
